About the Tuning Reference
This reference covers standard, drop, open, modal, and other alternate tunings for 6-string guitar and 4- and 5-string bass. Click any string circle to hear the pitch played through a plucked-string sound — useful for tuning by ear.
Use the search bar to filter by tuning name (e.g. "Open G") or by a note name (e.g. "Db"). The Guitar / Bass toggle in the top-right switches between instrument families.
Understanding alternate tunings: Lowering strings (like Drop D: D-A-D-G-B-E) makes power chords easier to play with one finger and gives a heavier low end. Open tunings (like Open G: D-G-D-G-B-D) let you play a full major chord across all open strings — a favourite in slide guitar and blues.
